On September 29th, I went to BarCamp Buenos Aires, my third BarCamp. I posted a brief 2500-word trip report to “kragen-journal”, a sort of mailing list pretending to be a blog, and I’m reposting a lightly edited version of it here at Chris’s invitation.

This is my third Bar Camp, and the smallest and shortest one I’ve been to so far, but in some ways, also one of the most inspiring.

Went to Bar Camp Buenos Aires today. Quite a number of surprises.

It was at Microsoft Buenos Aires, which appears to be purely a marketing organization, except that it has a server room with some Compaq rackmount equipment in it, apparently to impress visitors.

I never expected to have my passport checked by guys in dark suits in order to come either to Microsoft or to a Bar Camp. Because I didn’t successfully register on the web site before coming, I had to wait for about ten minutes (chatting with one of the event organizers) in order to get in. (Apparently the office is of fairly limited capacity, so registration was capped at 150. Hearsay says about 400 other people weren’t able to register. I guess the other 399 didn’t show up.)

There were only four rooms available for talks, and only eight hours — 11:00 to 19:00 today — for a total of 32 talk slots. The talk schedule was nearly full by 12:15, but filled up more slowly after that. As talks ran long, the last timeslot, which wasn’t full anyway, got scrubbed, cutting the number of talks to 28. We didn’t actually leave Microsoft until 20:30, at which point about 30 of us went to a nearby bar for another two hours. (See below for some details.)

I spent most of the first hour or so just watching other people socialize, due to feeling too shy to talk to them myself (in Spanish, which I still speak poorly).

Here’s the schedule as I wrote it down; it’s missing a couple of bits and probably has misspellings.

There were sticky nametags for people and various A4-size tags for labeling things. There are lots of bits of tag humor; one chair, identical to all the others, was labeled “SILLA COMODA”, which means “comfy chair“. And there were several people wearing tags like <PABLO> on their chests with a corresponding </PABLO> tag on their back. One guy, who I guess was completely empty, had a “<Julian/>” tag.

During the first talk slot, I flitted between the Microsoft marketing talk (which was disguised under the rubric of “users as developers”, but seemed to largely consist of demos of proprietary Microsoft software), a Telefonica talk that I couldn’t hear very well, a talk on valuation of startups according to options theory (which, naturally, featured the Black-Scholes equation), and a talk on “Management 2.0″, which mostly seemed like a bunch of standard Cluetrain platitudes, but which were so radical to one woman in the audience that she was circling her finger next to her temple. I leaned in and said, in Spanish, “Is it too obvious?”. Her eyes went wide. I laughed and stood back up.

There was a big sheet of butcher paper on one door labeled, “TAG CLOUD”, with some permanent markers provided nearby for adding tags. Before the first set of talks, it said only “WEB 2.0″, right in the center. In order to express my fears that this was going to turn into a sponsors’ marketing session — Microsoft in particular — I added a large tag covering much of the top of it, saying, “Softwarelibre”. By the end of the day, it was covered with tags in all different sizes and colors.

I spent some time talking with the psicofxp.com team, which, if I understood correctly, runs a set of ad-supported web forums with half a million users, all with five employees. I think they were all there at the conference. The employees, not the users.

The second talk slot I spent entirely listening to the “Science 2.0″ talk by Sebastian Bassi and Veronica Gonzalez. It was largely about the open-access movement in science; Bassi was wearing a PLoS Computational Biology T-shirt. The talk was somewhat sparsely attended, which surprised me, since the other concurrent talks sounded pretty lame from the titles. Three of them had “2.0″ in them.

Around this time, someone wrote, at the top of the scheduling whiteboard, “:%s/2\.0/OMGZ/”. At one point I did see someone change the name of the “Javascript 2.0″ talk, which was not about JavaScript 2, to “Javascript OMGZ”, but the instruction went otherwise unheeded.

Later on, someone added “#include <cerveza.h>” to the top of the same whiteboard, and still later, that was extended to

     #include <hombres.h>
#include <mujeres.h>
#include <cerveza.h>

The level of geek humor, and all-around geekiness, was comforting and reassuring. There was definitely a distinct Argentine flavor to this — many of the women wearing jeans and T-shirts were also wearing high-heeled boots, 95% of everyone was skinny, button-down shirts were common, many of the male presenters wore sports coats over their T-shirts, and people packed quite near one another in crowds, not hesitating to bump and nudge a bit when passing through — but it was comfortingly familiar. I didn’t see anybody wearing a tie after I got past the guards downstairs.

It was uncomfortably familiar in some ways, too; it was about 90% male, 98% white, and very focused on making money. There was a much higher level of marketing folks here than at the Bar Camps I’ve been to in the past, and the talk schedule above reflects those interests. I only saw real technical content in 4 of the 12 talks I attended. (Obviously I missed part of most of those talks.) Two out of the 28 talks were about SEO, and I think they were well-attended.

After the first couple of sessions, we had lunch (I mean, “<FOOD>”), which consisted of shish kebabs and sandwiches. In another Argentine touch, these were all heavy on the meat (the sandwiches were pebetes with either milanesa or matambre) and, in several cases, I saw abandoned skewers whose owners had eaten all the meat and left all of the vegetables.

The lunch was brought in by a catering company, which served the attendees. I didn’t see any of the caterers in any of the talks, nor did I see any of them signing up to give talks, and I can only assume that they didn’t feel welcome to do so, even though they must have had at least an hour of idle time in between the two major breaks.

After lunch, I went to the “Wikimedia Argentina” roundtable session, which unfortunately consisted largely of a couple of people complaining about how the Spanish Wikipedia was not very open to contributions from new users — their contributions were likely to be deleted without any kind of due process — and one person complained of the class system within Wikipedia.

Then there was the “Usability 2.0″ talk, in which I had a chance to hear different people’s varying ideas about what “Web 2.0″ meant (for the fifth year in a row — thanks a lot, Tim) and how AJAX affects usability. It wasn’t as interesting to me as it sounds, but the room was packed; there were 12 seats around the meeting table that occupied most of the room, but 39 people in total in the room.

After the break (”<BR/>”) I saw a bit of two talks, one about “Parlamento 2.0″ (in which Eduardo Betas, the speaker, said that 30% of the representatives from Buenos Aires have blogs, if I understood correctly) and one entitled “Sociedad, Estado e Internet. ¿Un nuevo mundo?” which largely consisted of a very excited Manuel Guntin expressing great enthusiasm about certain community web sites, for reasons I wasn’t quite able to grasp. It was very entertaining, but I think he would have had to speak a little slower for me to find it really informative. No doubt the native speakers were following him without trouble.

In Betas’s talk, I saw a book entitled “Casos Destacados.com”, which is a series of case studies of Argentine internet entrepreneurs. It looks sort of like an earlier, Spanish-language version of “Founders at Work“.

I went to the “Javascript 2.0″ talk, which included a bunch of demos of awesome things you can do with mootools, and general explanations of how to do them. As Nicolas was demoing a newish site belonging to Gucci, which looked a lot like a Flash site but was apparently in DHTML, I asked why it was better to do it in DHTML than in Flash.

For me, of course, the answer is that Flash is proprietary, so I don’t have it installed; installing or using proprietary software isn’t something I normally do just for recreation. So DHTML sites work and Flash sites don’t. (I’ve tried building Gnash from source, but I keep running into some stupid problem with automake.)

The question sparked quite an energetic discussion, which I took no further part in, because I wasn’t sure I wouldn’t be repeating something someone had just said that I hadn’t quite understood. But it was interesting to listen to.

I reluctantly skipped out on the end of the talk to see the tail of Maximiliano Firtman’s “Mobile Web 2.0″ talk, where he discussed the web-browser and future RIA platforms available for cellphones. I have the impression that the talk was excellent, but I can’t remember many specifics.

For the next and final talk, I went into the next room to see the “AJAX vs. FLEX vs. AIR vs. Silverlight” talk by the same guy, which went into some depth. AIR is the new name for Adobe Apollo, and Silverlight is the new name for WPF/E. I was kind of hoping for more in-depth coverage of XUL and OpenLaszlo, but he just sort of mentioned them in passing a couple of times. Still, overall it seemed like a very nice overview.

The four meeting rooms branched off the corners of a square central area that contained the food and was not really big enough for 150 people. It probably wouldn’t have been big enough for 75 Californians, unless they were the kind of Californians who hot-tub regularly with new acquaintances, but even with the reduced personal-space requirements of Argentinians, the conversations tended to spill out a bit.

(I think I like this smaller personal space, but it’s going to take me a while to get used to it. It makes it hard for me to meet people’s eyes, especially in loud environments.)

Having this central space connecting the rooms, rather than a thin linear hallway, seemed to be an enormous boon to the traditional hallway track. It was the most active hallway track I’ve ever seen, often with more people in it than any of the talks.

Fortunately, the meeting rooms had really excellent sound-dampening properties, despite having no visible sound-dampening features aside from heavy wooden doors. It was often quite difficult to hear the speaker when the doors were open to let someone in or out.

Afterwards, about 30 of us went out to Café La Barra nearby, which was somewhat noisier than the Microsoft office, so I had a harder time hearing conversations. After a couple of hours of beer and snacks (during which I accidentally learned what “¿te gusta el chorizo?” means), we were splitting up the bill, and Beatrice arrived.

I started getting tired enough that I would occasionally fall back to English during the bar time — a fault I hope to correct soon.

We finally headed out around 23:00, which means that I’d been either socializing or stressing about feeling too shy to socialize for the past 12 hours continuously. I hadn’t gotten a lot of sleep the night before (I think I slept roughly from 4 AM to 10:15 AM) and so the obvious next thing to do was to walk for half an hour to get to another party at another bar. So we walked to San Telmo near the Tanguera Hostel to go to a CouchSurfing meetup. I was feeling great!

After another hour and a half of socializing (mostly in Portuguese with a Brazilian tourist, who was delighted to find someone who spoke her language in Buenos Aires, however slowly — I think I was talking at about 50wpm instead of a normal fluent 300 — but she’d been feeling entirely dependent on her trilingual traveling companion while here) the music got loud enough that it was time to go home.

Now I have 20 new people’s names, mostly with some contact info, written down in my notebook, plus another 10 business cards of people I met. Hopefully, I can remember what I talked about with all of them and what they’re interested in. I probably could have established contact with more people, but this is already an increase from my usual level. Maybe I should see if I can get to know these 30 people a bit more first, to see if they are too many to get to know at once.

They include several of the organizers of the Bar Camp, plus apparently a substantial cross-section of the web industry here in Argentina — developers, marketers, managers, entrepreneurs, and a journalist, working at big mass-media companies, outsourced web development shops, community web sites, hosting companies, training companies, Google, and others. I met lots of people from Buenos Aires itself, but also people from Mar del Plata and Rosario.

(Part of my theory here is that a conference like this is a great opportunity to start new conversations, but only an average place to continue them. So it’s much better to start a lot of new conversations, and then continue them later over coffee or email or Twitter or something.)

There was, as far as I can tell, zero overlap between this group of people, who mostly use Firefox on Macs and seem to live in Twitter, and the CaFeLUG group I’m more familiar with. There are acquaintanceships, but I seem to be the only person in common between the two groups.

All in all, Bar Camp Buenos Aires was a tremendous success. None of my fears came to pass.

I’ve tried to get an iSight photobooth set up at previous BarCamps only to run into technical challenges or lack of interest. It was also probably not the best idea to leave a personal laptop lying around in the middle of an event open to the public when really your only goal is to capture photos of attendees primarily for posterity.

At BarCampBlock I renewed my determination and decided to lug down the Citizen Space Mac Mini, our 21″ Cinema Display, a keyboard, mouse and an old skool iSight to make it happen. You can check out our simple setup in the photo above.

Getting the system setup wasn’t that hard, especially with the reliable mesh network the folks from Meraki had setup for us. I used an app called Flickrbooth (written by Tristan O’Tierney in response to a lazyweb request I had put out in January of 2006) to upload the photos directly to the BarCamp Flickr account.

I then took a photo of myself to demonstrate what people should do (hold their name tag up next to their face so we could read their name and tag them later) and then opened that photo in Preview on the desktop so people would get the idea.

After awhile, I decide to open up the barcampattendee tag page on the BarCamp user so people could also see that these photos were being uploaded as they were being taken. I also installed Twitterrific and set it up to post to the BarCampBlock account; it turned out that not a lot of folks ended up posting to the account but they could still watch what people who were subscribed to BarCampBlock were saying.

Finally, the photobooth was located adjacent to the registration table and as people completed registration, they were ushered offer to have their photo and their badge memorialized quickly before heading off to the main event. Just a few examples:

If you’re in Philadelphia, or have been looking for an excuse to visit us, you should think about coming to BlogPhiladelphia on July 12 and 13th. The focus is social media, specifically blogging, but the conference is open to anyone and is completely free. We’ll be taking over the Radisson Plaza Warwick Hotel in Center City Philadelphia, which has been recently renovated and sits right on Rittenhouse Square which will provide some beautiful outdoor space for conversations should the weather permit.

The event will follow a hybrid model, similar to Web2.Open, with pre-scheduled speakers and session leaders, along with a Barcamp-style open grid presentation venue. The general concept shared between both is “encourage conversation”.

I’m working on the organizer to include a wiki and some other mechanisms on the website, along with the current sign up form, to encourage more pre-conference interaction.

For the benefit of those traveling in (from the press release):

To make this informational conference as accessible as possible for bloggers and non-bloggers alike, there will be no fee to attend. Participants are only required to cover travel and accommodations. For [..] links to recommended hotel packages and Amtrak discounts; and details on Philadelphia attractions, visit www.blogphiladelphia.net.

My hope for this event is to generate awareness of a lot of the cool projects and talent that are in Philadelphia. This also goes hand in hand with the coworking initiative that has gained quite a bit of momentum, Independents Hall.

The event is being formally organized by Annie Heckenberger at the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC), the creators of U Wish U Nu, a blog devoted to “citizen journalism” and spreading awareness of all of the cool things that go on in Philly, not just geared towards external tourism but for residents as well.

For more information about participating, reservations, ideas, or otherwise, contact myself, dangerouslyawesome at gmail dot com or annie at gptmc dot com.

Hope to see everyone in July!

Here are the details here sent out:

What is WineCamp?

WineCamp is an ad-hoc un-conference, set in the country. It is born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment.

Everyone is encouraged to participate at WineCamp: everyone sets the agenda, presents, leads or gets involved in discussions and creates together.

Where is WineCamp France?

WineCamp France will take place <a href="http://maps.google.fr/maps?f=q&hl=fr&q=saint-paul-en-
chablais&layer=&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=6&ll=46.468133,7.734375&spn=6.750105,25.334473&iwloc=addr”>near Lake Geneva in eastern France, in a small town called Saint-Paul-en-Chablais. It is 45 minutes from Geneva; 45 minutes from Lausanne (by boat); 2.5 hours from Lyon (by car) and 3 from Paris (by train).

How much does it cost?

We don’t know yet – depends on sponsors, and people who show up. Normally the cost covers basics – food and supplies. This is not a “conference” with an high admission price. WineCamp Calaveras had great sponsorship, and ended up costing participants $60 (45 Euros).

Who is “we”?

It’s you and anyone else who gets involved. Look at the WineCamp France wiki (see below) for more info about who has signed up to organize the event. The primary organizer and instigator for WineCamp France is Grégoire Japiot. The Smoking Goat is an early adopter and is also organizing and attending.

How do I get involved?

Read the latest on the WineCamp France website.

Visit the Wiki and sign yourself up – and volunteer to do something!
(Translators needed early and often!).

Sign up on the WineCamp email list.

We had an amazing time at the first WineCamp and can’t wait to see this event happen!

I ran across an interesting post by Sunshine in the follow up coverage to BarCampKenya — a humble beginning for the Eastern African BarCamp community — the signs of yet another seed beginning to take root abroad.

Sunshine writes:

I wanted to work in a cybercafe once, and the owner thought I was pretty enough to make a good receptionist, or possibly a great personal assistant. I remember using Opera in its formative stages and chided for ignorance when a failed page popped up as a result of a bug in the version at a cybercafe computer. Beauty is no curse, nor can I neglect to mention that Opera has improved considerably since then, but I digress for that disclaimer. After discovering more about the power of the entrepreneurs especially in developing markets, I now want to own a series of cybercafes, nee, become a premier ISP provider in the style of Africaonline.

I foresee a time when the fastest medium of connectivity in Africa will mature and we realise the incredible potential of this mobile phone age, in a country where there are over five million mobile subscribers and less than 100,000 active landlines (approximately), we have walked into a time of innovation and must work to find solutions to the social networking needs of these customers.

On a more positive note, I learned of the first Bar Camp in Kenya, where there was a gathering of intellectuals and techies interested in sharing ideas, networking, blogging and as well as exploring new technology in general. While we celebrate this inaugural event, and I plan to attend a similar future event, I still searched the presenter roster for a lady speaker. Whereas I I know several women personally who were trained in computer science at home in Kenya and abroad, we were missing in action. One cannot fail to notice the dearth in the blogosphere as well, for African women in ICT blogging or otherwise sharing about their work. Kudos to the team behind the Kenyan Bloggers Webring and African Women Blogs, for their efforts to reverse the downward trend and having support teams and bloggers who have expanded in number considerably.

I have no doubt that there is set to be a dramatic rise in the number of podcasts, blogs and writings that emerge from African women and Kenyan women in particular. Before that happens, more little girls have to have computer lessons, realise that this arena of computing, information technology and web 2.0 is theirs too, and pursue studies in computing to their highest potential. I hope to find examples of Kenyan tech blogging that highlight the few, the strong and the proud. Viva la techie femme!

I’m thrilled at the description of this vision and hope that the BarCamp community both continues to inspire, connect and provide social capital with which individuals can pursue such important goals, especially in the context of proactive inclusivity and the need for increasing diversity in the technology field.

I personally support Sunshine’s ambition to become “a premier ISP in Africa”. And I hope that somehow, the BarCamp community can reach out and bear witness to the realization of the goals of all who dare to dream so boldly.

BarCamp has yet to take a strong hold in Africa in anywhere but Johannesburg, South Africa.
However, with this weekend’s BarCampKenya (aka BarCamp Nairobi), it looks like that trend might finally be changing.
Organized by David Kariuki, Eric Magutu, Riyaz Bachani, Josiah Mugambi and Nick Muttai and taking place at University of Nairobi, Civil Engineering Lecture Theatre [...]
